SILENCIO was commissioned by Festival Instrumenta Oaxaca in 2014. This festival has been an outstanding organisation that promotes both musical performance and musical education at its highest level. The piece is a double homage to american composer John Cage and Mexican author Octavio Paz. The first movement – Lectura de John Cage, is built on Paz’s text of the same name and inspired by Cage’s piece for string quartet Four from 1989. Both of these texts by Paz, besides the intrinsic musicality in the author’s writing, make direct reference to both Cage’s music and aural phenomena and music itself. The piece is notated for voice, flute, violin & prepared guitar. This commission was made possible with the support from the Danish Arts Foundation.
